ABOUT
Individuals with an autism spectrum disorder often have difficulty developing friendships and intimate relationships. These individuals also commonly struggle to secure jobs, and thus are often underemployed. This may be due, in part, to social skill deficits. In this workshop, I will describe basic to complex social skills and then outline necessary components to obtain a socially competent repertoire. I will discuss how to identify social skills in need of intervention and how to design relevant teaching contexts. I will outline intervention aspects to teach foundation conversation skills, audience control. These findings have important implications for preparing individuals with ASD to have successful interactions, potential to develop meaningful relationships, and navigate the social world. Subsequent workshops in the series focus on complex play behaviors, and teaching attributes of healthy friendship skills as a safety skill.
COURSE OBJECTIVES

2. Understand how multiple control applies to conversation and social skills,

3. Describe how to program relevant stimulus conditions to teach conversation and social skills,

4. Describe how to program differential attention as a reinforcer.
