Campus Celebrates Autism

Our Campus community spent the last week celebrating autism. From our Director on Campus, Angela BookGlynn…

“We celebrated MAGNIFICENT MIND MONDAY.

Autism is a neurological variation, which means the brains of autistic people work differently than the brains of non-autistic people - and that's amazing!

We celebrated on Campus how amazing it is that our brains work in different, wonderful ways by wearing a fun hat!”

Meet Evan!

Last June, during a routine bike ride as he practiced for Ragbrai, Evan’s life took an unexpected turn when he was hit by a car. The accident left him with devastating injuries: two broken hips, a fractured pelvis, broken ribs, and a traumatic brain injury, among others.

But here’s where Evan truly shines. Despite the challenges he faced, his love for being active fueled his determination to reclaim his independence. He poured his heart into healing, demonstrating incredible resilience and grit. Throughout the fall and winter, he pushed himself every day, setting his sights on one of his major goals—earning his driver’s license.

Today, Evan’s hard work has paid off: he has successfully passed the written driver’s exam and is scheduled for the next steps in his journey toward independence!

Evan’s story is a powerful reminder that with dedication, strength, and an unwavering spirit, we can conquer even the toughest obstacles. We are SO proud of Evan and his remarkable commitment to meeting his goals! Keep shining, Evan!

Remembering a Legend

Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of Jay Byers, the beloved President of Simpson College. His passing leaves a profound void in the lives of all who knew him. Jay was not only a remarkable leader, but he also embodied kindness, compassion, and a genuine spirit that touched everyone around him.

Many of us will forever cherish the memories of his time as a board member at Balance Autism from 2013 to 2018. His dedication to making a difference in the lives of others was evident in everything he did.

As we reflect on his countless accomplishments, we remember Jay most fondly for his upbeat nature and his caring heart. Our thoughts and prayers are with Jay's family and the entire Simpson community during this difficult time. We are grateful for his legacy and will strive to honor it as we carry forward his spirit of kindness and generosity. Rest in peace, Jay. You will be deeply missed, but your legacy will live on.
