Happy Independence Day!

As we look forward to celebrating the Fourth of July, it's important to remember that traditional fireworks can be overwhelming for many individuals with autism and other sensory sensitivities.

That's why we're proud to sponsor the Sensory-Friendly Fireworks Display at the Freedom Lights Celebration on Saturday, July 11, at Beckman Heritage Farms in Burlington. Instead of loud explosions, families can enjoy a spectacular patriotic drone light show for a quieter, sensory-friendly alternative that creates an inclusive celebration everyone can enjoy.

Whether you're making plans for the holiday weekend or looking for an experience that's more accessible for your family, we hope you'll join us as we celebrate community, inclusion, and the many ways we can make traditions welcoming for everyone. Happy Fourth of July from all of us at Balance Autism!

celebrating the diversity of our staff, individuals served, and families. We remain committed to fostering a culture of inclusion, respect, belonging, and opportunity for all.

Important Update for Iowa Medicaid Members

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (Iowa HHS) has transitioned Medicaid assessment services from Telligen to CareStar.

If you or your family member are due for a Medicaid assessment or annual reassessment, you may now be contacted by CareStar instead of Telligen. This is an expected change as part of Iowa Medicaid's new assessment process.

What this means for you:

  • You may receive a phone call, letter, email, or text from CareStar to schedule your assessment.

  • The organization conducting the assessment has changed, but the purpose of the assessment and your eligibility process remain the same.

  • There is no action needed unless CareStar contacts you to schedule an assessment.

If you have any questions or are unsure whether a communication is legitimate, please contact your Balance Autism team. We're happy to help you navigate the process.

Small Moments that Matter

Some of the biggest milestones don't come with applause or celebration. Sometimes they happen in just a few quiet seconds.

Last Friday afternoon, one of our young learners (we'll call him Leo) was wrapping up his therapy session. Like many children, transitions haven't always come easily for him. Moving from a favorite activity to getting ready to leave has often been one of the hardest parts of his day.

But this time was different. As his session ended, Leo looked at the small green toy car he'd been playing with, then looked at his behavior therapist. Without being prompted, he handed over the car, walked to his cubby, and grabbed his backpack to go home.

It took only a few seconds.

To someone passing by, it might not have looked like much. But for the people who have been part of Leo's journey, it was a huge moment. Those few seconds represented so much more than putting away a toy. They reflected growing confidence, trust, flexibility, and independence—skills that take time, patience, and countless small steps to build.

Perhaps the most meaningful part came a few moments later, when Leo's mom saw what had happened. There was a smile, a look of pride, and that familiar sense of relief that so many parents experience when they realize, "We're making progress."

Those are the moments that remind us why we do what we do.

At Balance Autism, we celebrate the big milestones, but we also celebrate the quiet victories that happen every day. Because those small moments often become the foundation for bigger successes tomorrow. Thank you for allowing us to be part of your family's journey. We never take that privilege for granted.

Helping Families Find Inclusive Community Experiences

Finding activities where your loved one or family feels welcome can make all the difference. That's why we're always looking for sensory-friendly events and inclusive experiences happening throughout Iowa that families may enjoy together.

Throughout the year, you'll see us share events hosted by many different organizations. Our goal isn't to endorse every event or organization, but simply to help connect families with opportunities to participate in their communities in ways that are meaningful to them.

Whether it's a sensory-friendly Mass, a sporting event, a holiday celebration, a cultural festival, a museum program, or something entirely different, we hope these opportunities help your family discover places to connect, explore, and create lasting memories.

Know of an event our families would enjoy? We'd love to hear about it! Please send the details to Admissions@BalanceAutism.org so we can help spread the word.
