Stephen Tsai Award - ASI Conference - Open Enrollment - Corteva Halloween Extravaganza

Stephen Tsai Award for Excellence in Autism Education

The Stephen Tsai Award for Excellence in Autism Education, established by Stephen Tsai and presented annually by the Autism Society of Iowa, honors educators and professionals who have made outstanding contributions to individuals with autism. Named after Stephen Tsai—who created the award to give back to those who supported him—the recognition celebrates dedication, compassion, and innovation in autism education and support. Each year, nominees are recognized for making a positive impact on the lives of people on the spectrum, with the award presented at the ASI Fall Conference. Past recipients have included teachers, behavior specialists, and autism service providers across Iowa, all exemplifying the spirit of inclusion, advocacy, and excellence that the award represents.

This year we are thrilled and privileged to celebrate one of this year’s award winners, Evelyn Horton.

“Her career reflects everything this award honors—vision, impact, and unwavering commitment to people with autism in Iowa.”

Evelyn recently retired after 19 years at Balance Autism and was nominated for this year’s Stephen Tsai award by her colleagues.

“Evelyn is a natural leader—firm in her values, passionate in her purpose, and endlessly generous in lifting up those around her. Her charisma, sharp wit, and wonderful sense of humor light up every room she walks into.

She has helped shape not only the services we provide but also the culture in which we provide them. She’s mentored emerging leaders, influenced statewide strategy, and been a tireless voice for equity, access, and excellence. Her legacy is measured not just in policy wins or program outcomes, but in the thousands of lives made better because of her work and presence.”

Congratulations, Evelyn! We are so proud of you.

Plan Now, Save Later -

Open Enrollment

As many employers begin their open enrollment periods in November and December, now is a great time to review your family’s medical coverage. For families we serve at Balance Autism, especially in our clinic setting, this is an important opportunity to ensure your plan meets your child’s needs for autism services. It’s also a good time to consider setting aside funds in a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to help cover therapy or medical expenses in the year ahead. Taking a few minutes now to plan can make a big difference later!

Corteva Halloween Extravaganza

Each year, Corteva Agriscience’s Disabilities Awareness Network (DAWN) promotes community engagement during the Halloween season by distributing goodie bags to local organizations and families. This year, they took things to the next level with an in-person, Candy Land–themed celebration designed to spark connection and fun for all.

Guests enjoyed colorful activities, themed photo booths, a calm movie room, and a resource fair featuring local organizations that support individuals with disabilities.

Balance Autism joined the fun with a “sensational” table filled with interactive sensory activities and goodies! The sensory swivel chair had kids laughing and spinning with joy, while the liquid floor tiles captured everyone’s curiosity and wonder.

We’re grateful to Corteva for hosting such a creative and inclusive event — and for their efforts to foster community connection and engagement.
